DixieLand Jazz Festival

Don't forget to go to the Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival this weekend.

While the rest of the country is worrying about their snow and cold, remember why Thanksgiving in San Diego is still great.

Just in Time for Thanksgiving

Over at that other San Diego campus, it seems officials are trying to regulate speech and meetings.

In an email sent out to all the students, that was difficult to understand or follow, the University let everyone know they'd be revising the code and that it'd be done in 2 weeks.

...precise campus maps marking "Designated Public Forums" for the exercise of free speech, a set of requirements for making reservations to hold protests in those areas, hours and decibel levels at which "expressive activity" can occur and-in what has some members of the campus community suspicious about the policy's timing-a section reminding members of the university staff and faculty to keep their "Personal Political Activity" separate from university activities while using university resources.

Some students are protesting and even started their own website.

Vazquez, who keeps the website updated with news about the policy, said the idea of a small group of students having to get a permit for a gathering is what concerned him the most about the policy. "This is a true violation of our right to expression and it must be stopped," reads the site. "The future of student activism and public expression at UCSD is at stake!"

Permits for students to gather? This sounds like the evil people in Harry Potter.

Moving back home with Mom and Dad?

The City Council voted to approve an ordinance that would require owners of places with 6 or more occupants to pay another $1000 for annual permits and provide parking for all adults.

“If they can't provide all the parking spaces, what are they supposed to do? Kick grandma out? Get rid of a car?”

Um, this is going to combat the the fact that living here is too f-ing expensive how?

Finally from our perspective

We get a lot of shit for being college students and, you know, breathing.

The CityBeat runs a story this week about what it's like to live in the college slums. A house that was never brought up to code and has 14 other people living in closets that are labeled as "walk-in bedrooms".

Apparenlty, *shock* it's not all parties and beer bongs. Sometimes, we just need somewhere to live. Oh yeah, and we don't have money.

San Diego wildfires: Gay areas spared

None of San Diego's gayest areas was hit by the massive wildfires that roared around the county and the city...

Oh, good. It was probably because our special powers.

Kudos, to Delores Jacobs, at the LGBT Center, for this quote:

"But I don't think their first thought is, 'My house is burning, I'm gay,' I think their first thought is, 'My house is burning!'"

The other great quote comes from Nicole Murray-Ramirez.

"So many average gays got off their sofas and volunteered or took in people," said Murray-Ramirez.

I love Nicole as much as everyone. He's done an amazing amount of work and is the undisputed queen of the community. I just hate to think I'm average.
